Brush Drops Lamar Savage Football to 0-2

Brush 21, Lamar 0

The two-headed monster in the Brush Beetdigger backfield of Nick Wellen and Isaac Morales combined to rush for 281 yards as the visitors grinded their way to a 21-0 victory over the Lamar Savages in Week 2 action at Savage Stadium.

Lamar (0-2) was playing without starting quarterback Andres Guevara, running back Walker Kee, lineman Adrian Aguirre and a few others that were injured in the Week 1 loss to Eaton. But they produced a solid effort, particularly on the defensive side. The Brush defense bottled up quarterback Isaiah Latour who completed 3 of 13 passes for 46 yards and two interceptions. The Savage ground game also had a hard time moving the ball as they finished with 49 yards.

The only notable drive came right after Wellen scored from five yards out with :52 left in the second quarter that gave Brush a 6-0 lead. Latour completed a 25-yard pass to Brandon Chavira and a pass interference penalty allowed Lamar to get the ball to the Beetdigger 25-yard line. But Latour was sacked on the final play of the half.

As the game wore along, the longer amount of time that the Savage defense had to spend on the field. Brush added to their lead when quarterback Cade Uhrich found tight end Ryan Dunker for a 10-yard touchdown, and Wellen’s run on the conversion made it 14-0 with 6:06 to go in the third quarter.

Then with 6:33 left in the fourth, Uhrich kept it himself and ran around the right end for a 13-yard touchdown and a 21-0 lead.

Lamar was unable to sustain a drive against a Brush defense that through two weeks has only allowed one offensive touchdown.

The Beetdiggers outgained the Savages 302-95 and forced three Savage turnovers. Despite all of that, the Savages nearly kept Brush (1-1) out of the end zone for the entire first half and battled well in the second half despite not having things go their way.

The Savages will look for their first win in the homecoming game next Friday, Sept. 15 against the Burlington Cougars. Kickoff is set for 6:30pm.
