#5 Lamar 19, Burlington 3 (4 inn.)
The Lamar Lady Savage softball team turned in another impressive performance on Tuesday, this time on the road at Burlington, using red hot bats and taking advantage of defensive miscues to run away with a four-inning victory, 19-3.
The Lady Savages went on the attack right away as Wiley senior Haleigh Prosser doubled to deep center, driving home junior Laci Coen and senior Morgan Reed for a quick 2-0 lead. A pair of Burlington errors helped to make for a big opening frame as Lamar jumped ahead 6-0.
In the bottom of the first with two outs, Burlington shortstop Megan Burghart doubled to right center but was thrown out trying to stretch it into a triple and that momentum carried over into the second inning where errors continued to plague the Lady Cougars. Holly junior Sydnee Howland doubled home a pair of runs for a 9-0 lead. Senior Alexa Comstock and Coen added two-out RBI singles to increase the lead to 11-0.
Lamar (7-4) loaded the bases to start the third and Howland lined a double to left-center to score two more. After a groundout for the first out of the inning, six consecutive hitters reached base and Coach Mindy McCoy reached into her dugout to bring in substitutes as her team took a 19-0 lead.
Burlington (1-6) scored three runs on three hits in the bottom of the third for their offensive output. The Lady Savages finished with 17 hits and were error-free defensively.
Eads junior Kaylee Wilson, who started in left field and later played some at shortstop, led the way with four hits out of the #9 spot in the lineup. Coen delivered three hits and got the win in the circle, allowing three earned runs in four innings and striking out three.
Lamar will next host #8 La Junta on Thursday night at Citizens Field. The varsity game will begin around 6pm, following the JV contest which starts at 4:30.
